Company Profile
      and background

Recycling in action

We all recognise that as much waste as possible should be recycled. Just outside Peterborough a family-owned composting business established in 1991 has grown into the UK's largest composting centre. Each year Organic Recycling Ltd processes up to 25,000 tonnes of fruit, vegetables, paper, cardboard, horticultural, agricultural, and green material into compost, mulches and soil conditioners.

Organic Recycling was established as a diversification from farming. Now ORL process waste materials from blue chip food processing companies, local authorities and landscaping businesses into more than 7,000 tonnes of compost products for use in farming, horticulture and gardens under its BettaLand brand.

Helping others

Organic Recycling's fully licensed 370-acre site near Crowland is also a leading centre for research into recycling of biodegradable materials. We offer our experience to others wishing to develop composting businesses or dispose of waste materials responsibly, through our consultancy and project management service.

Case Studies

The Garden Of Wales

The Millennium project based in Carmarthenshire was the first national botanic garden to be created in the United Kingdom for over 200 years. Created in 2000, we were contracted to supply a large volume of soil conditioner to a national landscaping company overseeing the development.

East Of England Showground

Growing with compost produced by Organic Recycling Ltd

As part of their programme to become more environmentally friendly, we teamed up with the East of England Agricultural Society to compost 150 tonnes of strawed waste generated at the shows each year. The high-grade compost will be used to condition horse and livestock rings in the winter months.

Swedeponic

Leading fresh herb supplier, Swedeponic UK, challenged us to develop a peat-free compost to protect dwindling reserves of peat. By eliminating peat it could also qualify for organic status with the Soil Association. The successful project won us, and Swedeponic, the Environment Prize in the 2003 Peterborough Evening Telegraph Business Awards.

Sherwood Energy Village

This unique initiative transformed a 91-acre former colliery into an environmental enterprise. Keen to use as much recycled material as possible, we were brought on board in early 2002. After site visits and taking soil samples for analysis, we developed two special blends of soil conditioner, one for grass planting and the other for shrub and tree plantings.
